hps lighting

i bought some outdoor hps lights 100w for 20.00 each rewired them so they can plug into a outlet i have 4 of them which makes it 400w for 80.00 bucks has any one tried this or am i wasting my time thanks

a bunch of growers have the infamous hid for 20 bucks. As far as I have read they work but hid's need a ballast and the wiring you are doing worries me. DO a pm to clanchatten(electrician) unless you KNOW exactly what you r doing. this is my opinion only I wish you luck on your grow

id have to say wasting your time i got my 400w hps ballast and hood off craigslist.com for $120. im no expert but they come with a ballast for a reason.

I am assuming that you mean that you rewired so that they could be plugged into a wall socket and did not have to be hard wired in??? If you are confident that you did this correctly, used the right gauge/type of wire, that you connected the correct wires together, and used wire nuts or some other secure method of connecting your wires (not just black tape) then you should be okay.

I took a couple of 150W HPS yard lights and separated them from their ballasts, ran some longer wires, added an electrical outlet and put them into a cool tube. Four 100W HPS will not put out as much light (lumens) as a single 400W HPS, but they will do you better than CFLs.

I love my $20 HPS. I have 3. I wish I'd bought 5, while they still had them. And THG's DIY dual 150 watt cool tube is perfect . I veg under it, too.
