Distance from lite to hood

Ok I was wondering how close should a 1000 watt HPS lite should be to my Alum. hood.?
I have about 8 inches between the hood and top of the lite.
I can't give a pix of it, No batt.

Do you hve a vented hood or cool tube? You need to get the light as close to the tops as you can without burning the plants...a good test is to put the backside of your hand where the tops are and if it burns your hand then it is too close...adjust it to the point where it is closest to the tops without it hurting your hand..

I made a flat 4x4 hood out of Alum. as you can see in the first pix and with the bracket that holds the light in place , top of the light is 6 inches from the hood.
Should I remake the bracket so the lite is closer to the hood.?

The 2 pix is my old hood that is 3x3 with a 7 inch flange and that what I used for my last few grows and it too small for my 6x7 room. I am going to take a house window and cut it down or have one cut down to size so I can make a cool tube hood and cut down the heat during the summer time..

I know about putting my hand on top of the plants to feel if the plants are to hot or not..
