i have a 23 watt soft white compact fluor, with an output of 1600 lumens, so i guess my question is will this be good enough for the first two weeks of growth for 1 plant?

Hm... It will be sufficient, but probably hardly because you are more than likely going to be losing lumens unless it's in a fully reflective grow cab/box. You're going to need to direct all the light you possibly can at the plant. Growth might be a little slow, but as a seedling it will be fine. Try to place that sucker as close as you possibly can without burning the seedling up. I have used a single 15 watt (950 lumen) to grow a seedling, but I'm not sure if it was for 2 weeks, that seems kind of long to be using such low lumens, so I'm not positive the 23 watter will be good or not, but if anything, it's light at least.
You might be better off putting the plant on a window sill and let the sun get at it.

Just buy another light a spliter that makes it so you can have two bulbs in 1 light is only like $3 and another 2000 lumen cfl is like $3 so Fnd $6 and your plant will be alot happier.

i only use clf's from start to finish and mine do very well. all you need is some aluminum domes with clamps from wal-mart, homedepot, or freds. there like 6 bucks and just keep adding clf's, you can get 42 watt clf's = 2700 lumens full spectum for 7 buck at wal-mart, or 32 watt = 1600 for 3 bucks, i've got a total of 12 clf's with a total lumen out put of 32400. works like a charm i hope this helps.

One would be ok but the more lumens the better. I would get as many cfls as you can possibly fit into your grow area and use them all. Also, you should probably plant some more seeds. That one seedling may end up being male and that would be a shame for your first grow. You may want to consider purchasing a HID system. Just my thoughts. Take care and be safe. Keep us posted.

ya i've learned the hard way to always start alot more than you really want. the last two grows i started 6 plants and only got 1 female plant each time. i add lights almost every week its easier for me to buy one light a week then to spend all that money at once for a hps.. saying that i have finally ordered a 400 hps from inside sun.com 100 bucks gotta see what all the fuss is about.

You're going to love that 400 watt hps slowmo. You will see MUCH better results, I'm sure. Take care and be safe.
