i have a 5 inch plant and its been on a 24 hour light schedule and its starting to leaf in the corners of the nodes, should i start it on a 12/12 light schedule to start flowering or is it to early?

I also believe that it is too early. Flowering a plant that small will result in a very small harvest. We generally wait until we get alternating nodes and/or they show sex before we put them into 12/12. This usually happens between 6 and 8 weeks old. How old is your plant? What size and kind of light are you vegging with?

im pretty sure its a female, i have 3 lamps hanging upside down with 3 20 watt 1250 lumens cfls and a fan on them 24 hours a day n my closet, my bigger plants started leafing at the nodes at 12 inches

from what i can gather what you are currently doing will not sufficiently grow mj. you have far to few lumens per square foot and just having a fan blow on them is not exchanging the air within the grow room. it's only moving it around. the plant's have long since depleted all of the co2 within the space. they're small b/c you need more light. you need proper ventilation.

dare i ask what you have been feeding them?

it's obvious you've done very little reading on the subject of growing mj. just throwing a couple shop lights together with some soil in pots will not grow this plant properly.

you have to decide whether or not the investment into some real indoor growing equipment is worth it or not. b/c what you are doing right now is not going to work.

some things to keep in mind going forward...

you need sufficient light. so if you plan to use ur closet i suggest you measure it and get a square footage. you need at least 3000 lumens per sq/ft for veg, and 5000 lumens per sq/ft for flower. i repeat these are the MINIMUMS.

you need to properly ventilate your space. that means purchasing an inline fan. a 4" should work for your closet if it is standard size, but anything bigger and you'll prolly want to go up to a 6" inline fan.

your space NEEDS to be light tight. no light leaks in or out. not doing so will disrupt the flowering cycle and inevitably cause your plants to re-veg or hermie.

you need to chose a method of growing (hydro, organic soil, synthetic soil). this will determine the medium and food you will need to allow your mj to flourish.

your initial investment will end up around $500-$1000. depending on which growing method you chose, and whether or not you use the cloest or buy a tent.

Growing 1 plant is a waste of electricity, period.
If your not an experienced grower you most likely won't yield more than an oz. anyways, if your lucky, do the math on the cost of electricity and bulbs and medium, nutes, etc., and the time invested for 1 small plant.

If you were to veg. this plant for a few months and train it, feed it and light it properly, then you should yield much more.
In the mean time, read up and learn.

i don't have one plant, i have 3. one's two foot tall i think im doing a pretty good actually two are already flowering. the other plant is my smaller one i got them all pretty close together getting over 3000 lumens, and theyve been getting fertilizer so their healthy, this one just seems like its flowering too soon. my 2ft tall plant didn't do this until 12inches. there's a vent in there so theres venilation. its showing the signs just like my other ones.

I highly doubt that they are flowering. What you are seeing is simply new growth. Your plants are not going to flower under 24 hour light. Autos flower under 24 hour light, but you would know if you had autos. Buds do not grow at leaf nodes. What you will see first is alternating nodes and then you should start seeing signs of sex--these are pre-flowers and not actually buds.

The light you have is inadequate. Three thousand lumens is good for about 1 sq ft when vegging and is good for a space about 9" x 9" for flowering--and I am talking about enclosed spaces with reflective walls. Having the plants all pushed together in a larger space just lets the light escape throughout the entire room and rather than actually having 3000 lumens, you actually have about 1/2 that getting to the plants. You also need a different light spectrum for flowering.

Having ventilation means that you have an exhaust fan that actually pulls the hot air out of the space. You need this in addition to an oscillating fan that moves the air around.

Unfortunately this growing thing is not cheap--i.e. there is a reason that bud costs a lot. There are certain minimums that you have to maintain if you want to be able to harvest anything worth the 4 months it takes to grow a plant. Like shortbus mentioned, it really takes a lot to set up a proper type grow space. We would love it if you could do it with a few CFLs and a small oscillating fan, but in reality it takes far more than that. We just don't want you to get 4 months down the road and have nothing to show for your efforts.

Pictures would really help us. Can you post up some pics?
