430 watt hps question

It's been along time sinced I posted, But I have a couple of questions about my 430 watt hps light.

1. Can the ballast be placed on a wood surface (example: on top of a cabnet) cause it gets pretty hot and I don`t want to burn down my apartment building.

2. My hps light and ballast hasen`t been used in over 3 years, is it safe to use. I bought it about 5 years ago.

never had a problem with ballast catching fire, if you're concerned use something non flamable like a large serving plate. I would clean the bulb with alcohol. The bulb may go after so long, I would not stand too close. They call them High Pressure sodiums for a reason.
