Well i picked up some 3 way cfls a while back knowing that the sockets i was going to use weren't 3 way sockets. So i screwed them in for a test run and they run @ full strength without the need for an actual 3 stage switch 
hope this can cure any questions concerning using 3 way cfls with ordinary single throw switch
