Weed DNA, can it be altered?

Has anyone ever done any research or experiments on altering the dna of weed? You know turning off or on certian traits through the helix. I know tons of growers use sexing to alter the traits but has anyone did it through the dna? You get more precise control, but it's a lot to deal with at the same time.
