Hi everyone From what I understand many of you all seem to veg your plants either using t-5s or some sort of CFL set up using many individual bulbs, I have 4 babys currently growing under 4 -27 watt- ( 100 watt) daylight bulbs with a metal reflector . You guys convinced me that in order to do sucsessfull grows with nice dense buds I have to use HID/HPS so I have ordered this with a few other things.. My question is this. I ordered the 600 watt HID/HPS bulbs 95,000 lumens with a cool tube.. Will this be appropriate to put my babys under when it arrives? They are still small. like with only 2 sets of leaves one with three sets.. Why don't the majority of you guys use HID lighting for veggin instead of T 5s? Or did I just hear from T 5 and CLF veggers? Thanks Hero

You need to be carefull because of the heat. The cooltube was a good buy but you also need a extractor attached to it so you can lower the temps.

T-5's and cfl's are much cheaper to operate then HID's.

When I started I used a 400 mH for veg worked great but later switched to t-5's.

Need to ventilate well with HID's and slowly lower the light towards the plant so that it can be accustom to the light and heat.

I do not really care for cool tubes. I like a/c reflectors better:bong:

HID stands for high intensity discharge. There are several different types of lights that fall into this catagory, including metal halides and high pressure sodium. Metal halides have a lot lower lumen to watt ratio than HPS and put out more heat. They emit about 90 lumens per watt--about the same as a T5 (cfls are about 30% less efficient, emitting about 60 lumens per watt). However, the T5 disburses the light far more evenly with a lot less heat than the MH. While the T5 will not have the penetrating power of the MH, it has far less heat so that you can get the light within inches of the tops of the plants. I believe that this negates the lesser penetration of the T5s. I found that 216 watts of T5 light gave me as good as vegging growth as 400 watts of MH.

Ever since I switched to T-5's, thanks to listening to THG, I have always had the most perfect and uniform looking veggies. This really helps in shaping to plants to your liking. I usually keep the light 2-3" from the tops with no problems. Then when your ready, move them to the big light.

Good growing!

i have been using a 600 mh for sometime now & the reason is space. cant get a 4' fixture in my veg room until today i saw an 8 bulb 2 foot bulb unit (2'x2') . im def scooping that up. theyre much easier on the pocket book in all reguards

Hi hero, while they are that small I would continue to use the CFL's. They are going to give them enough light for veg while they are still that small. Once they get to be about 10"-1 foot I would switch them. Running a 600 watt HID light 24 hours a day will cost a lot more than running the CFL's and while the plants are that small they don't need that much light. Just my two cents anyway and what I would do.

Thanks Sensistar.. Didnt you do a grow with 6 CFLS for veggin? I thought that was you but not quite sure.. I saw the pics and the plants look healthy. I guess I will follow the what the majority goes with.. and either CFL or T 5's are the plan I guess for veggin.. Being that I already have 4 under a reflector I might as well just either build another reflector unit with the 4 bulbs under or hang some more.. I ordered a few white rhino femmed seeds from nirvana a few mins ago.. I just want to make sure I have at least 4 to 6 healthy females.. in the tent.. Thanks again all. Hero

Yeap. Clones under a one foot floro, vegging plants under 35 watt CFL's, then flower under two 600HPS. In my current journal though I am vegging a few plants under a 400HPS because they got too big for the CFL's.

CFLs will cost you about 30% more in electricity every single month. This is a consideration to keep in mind when deciding what you want to use to veg month after month.

I know Hempgodess I wish u handled my bills. I have been to several places in my area looking and have found 4 footers.my tent is 40 by 40. I will either have to put three 2 footers side by side on a piece of plywood to make a panel or order from the net again, Sure you guys dont work for the hydro stores getting kickbacks. lol Anyways Thanks everyone. I am always looking for ways to save money and try to watch out for others' pocketbooks too. These are tough times. When I found out that 216 watts of T5s worked as well as 400W of MH, I was quite pleased. Have you checked out the 2' PLL (double tube) T5s fixtures at HTG? Two 2' double tubes put out 10,000 lumens and use 108W. I believe they have a 4 tube fixture now that puts out 20,000 lumens. I have really happy with mine for those spaces where a 4' fixture will not fit.

LOL--Not workin' for the hydro store--just trying to save you some money on electricity.
