Welcome spring, maybe a bit soon for you east coasters.

What are you guys growing this year? I am going to be doing raised, really raised boxes this year. Mr rb and i are going to make some 4'x2 boxes and put them on tall legs.. I want to do beets and onions and garlic and need your guys suggestions.

Thanks.

Rose, depending on the depth of your boxes for those root veggies...Mrs C really would like some of those Ol Lady beds,,, Spinach..Lettuce..Greens, are great in the spring, before it gets to hot... Oh I can't wait:)

Cane, don't you think 12 inches is deep enough? What are your thoughts, and did you just call me an old lady gardener????

Kale, strawberries:)

How deep do you think it should be you guys? Yum, Duck, yes on strawberries, maybe we need two boxes.. What do you think the perfect size is for a family of two?

Spring? I still have 3-4' of snow on the ground, it snowed over an inch last night and it is still snowing....And to those people in the Great Lakes and New England areas, stay warm!

I would build a little deeper boxes for root veggies--I think 16-18". I usually grow stubby carrots and other than potatoes, the other root veggies are not that large. I always put potatoes in large tubs with plenty of depth. Other veggies will do fine in 12" deep boxes. I don't think that 2 4 x 2 beds will be nearly large enough for 2 people though. I have a 4 x 8 and 2 4 x 4 raised beds that I have no trouble filling. The length of my yard also has a retaining wall where I have a strawberry area. That alone is about 4 x 12. I grow lots of greens as I love to be able to go out in the yard and "pick a salad".

I generally plant lots of greens (all kinds), radishes, carrots, potatoes, broccoli, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and 1 (only 1) zucchini plant.

Psst, Rosebud, I also call them "old lady beds". I have a friend that has an artificial knee and she is not able to get down on her hands and knees at all. She also had no real good place to build permanent beds. So, we made a portable garden. I whipped up some liners made out of landscape cloth and put them into milk crates. These we set on other milk crates to raise them up so they were easy to work on. This made a fast easy garden for her. We ran it much like a square foot garden.

square foot garden.---i got that book---hahaha

@ rb---think you are supposed to plant garlic in november at thanksgiving

Orange, fine, on the garlic... square foot is in the ground though...how deep my garden?

No, square foot gardening is about growing in raised beds. It doesn't matter if they are on the ground or raided a couple of feet--the idea is the same. I found the original square foot gardening author Mel Bartholomew to be a little full of himself and too insistent on following his recipes and methods exactly (which aren't that good). But others have written books and there is a lot of info online about sq ft gardening.
