I only use tops.

I've found the smaller lower limbs actually take better when doing cuttings. iF I remember correctly from my propagation book, vitamin B1 collects in the lower branches or suckers, which is actually the primary ingrediant in commercially available rooting hormones. I do believe this is so (in the wild w/o human manipulation) as the x-mas tree shape fills out, the bottom ones reach to the ground via gravity and naturally air layer themselves. I've cloned girls for 12 years and had better % of pullthroughs with the tiny ones then with the tops. Tho I've also gotten the topped tops take as well. Take care, budskies.

I take clones from the top and from the lower branches--depends on how I am growing. Sometimes I top the plants and clone that. Sometimes I trim the lower branches and use those.
