Hey all I was reading the forums and was just wanting to ask a question.... Some growers say they can tell what sex their plant will be as early as the first 3 weeks, how is this done?

they could be refering to preflowers, although mine are about 11 weeks old now and i havent seen any. if you want to know the sex early, then id recomend taking a cutting off your plant, and sex it indoors. good luck with your decision.

The people you are refering to probably grow a strain that they are familiar with. I have heard if you become very familiar with a strain you can tell male from femaly before flowers start....but its never 100% correct you can just look at height, mass and how its growing I guess, to try and tell early but I still say its a guess till you see some flowering.

Also the males TEND to be taller than the girls as they reach maturity earlier.....so that they may pollenate....(I guess so that the pollen sacs are above the female flowers).........But this is not true with all strains......:)

The only real way to tell sex is to let the plant mature first. This is when it starts growing alternating nodes. Once the plant is mature, you can take a single cutting from it and flower it with a 10/14 lighting schedule with the light being on for 10 hours each day. This will cause rapid flowering on the cutting in about 7 days.

Some strains develop "preflowers" that you can see and tell sex. This is also after the plant matures. There is no reliable method to tell sex prior to the plant maturing. Most strains mature at about 6 to 8 weeks old.

Good luck to you man!

Hmmm thats interesting, it probably wouldnt be worth the hassle to take a cutting and force flower it really I reckon, I suppose it would take the expectation and excitement out of the grow for me lol!
Cheers for the replies:clap:

Hi
You can try this .cover 1 branch on each plant with a dark \light proof bag for 12\12 this should cause early sexing and if you do this to a branch that you can prune from the plant you wount hermi the plant
hope this helps

i dont know if that would work, would it? im not sure, i remember seeing a plant on here somewhere, where 1 side was in veg and the other in flower. this was due to it being near a fence, so you could give this a try.

Nah the better way would be to take the cutting but thats still after its matured... instead of trying to butch up a plant after you shocked and confused the hell outta it with a bag... stoney is right... let the plant show preflowers... clone it..and then tell sex... or just let them go until they start to flower on their own..and either move the males out... or kill them there...

Personally i want to breed.. so a male isnt going to be the end of the earth...

Question: How does the 10/14 cause rapid flowering? Can you flower a full plant with that schedual or would it screw it up?..Sorry if this is a stupid question but iv never heard of using 10/14

It's better to use as many hours of light as possible when flowering, but when sexing a plant, a sure way to initiate flowering is to do so at a 10/14 schedule. Some strains will resist flowering on a longer light cycle and this will delay the sexing of the plant.
