i just read (sticky) to start seedlings in a container w/2in. vermiculite on top and taproot is facing upward ???????second time i read this.last 2 years put taproot facing DOWN. the seed shell popped off when the first set of leaves opened.was-up????

I go tail down seed up, about an inch or inch n half down. Mist with a sprayer and wait.

I just drop the seed in the hole,it will do the rest.

If you are planting something you germed in paper towel or a glass of water, I would put the root down. Gravity will make it grow down if you plant it facing up, but IMO, this is not good and is not beneficial to fast and healthy root development.

Seeds should only be planted a 1/2" or so deep.

I've seen folks recommend root down, others root up. I compromised and always set the seed in the soil on its side. Figured that the plant was smarter than me in knowing which way it needed to grow... heh...

Sideways works great.

:yeahthat:

This is what I do also.

But, what I've seen in hort books is, the root first emerges up, makes a U and heads down. The straightening of this U is what pops the seed husk/leaves above ground rather than pushing straight up.

Sideways eliminates all the up/down hoo ha.

once it's in the hole---i usually can't tell the difference between the seed, the dirt, and the perlite ---but---when i grow in the topsy turvey---the tail points up
