Russell was one of the founders of the American Indian Movement (AIM), which was pretty radically in the 1960's-1970's until federal marshals ended up kind of like Custer, but at Wounded Knee in 1973. Russell was Oglala Sioux.

He did a some movie work (Last of the Mohicans, Natural Born Killers) and he was a really pretentious and self-important man.
