Question about MH HPS BULBS

the Mrs. is a little concerned about exposure to the rays from the MH bulbs, I told her to just wear one of my light longsleeve shirts and with a little common sense like dont touch or stare (or break),she should be fine, has anyone ever broke one like standing up and hitting it with there head or just broke one anyway at all, while it was ignited!! I saw these aircooled hoods with the glass shields i guess they are, so it tells me the lights could hurt you maybe, i dont know!! can anyone tell me what happens if one breaks during operation? how about the CFLs? does mercury go everywhere? those little money saving curly cue bulbs for the house now i see have special instructions for disposing them. How about disposing the MH bulbs themselfs? I'm a big safety guy,I just don't want anyone hurt doing this,i'll probably add check your smoke detector batteries to my signature, lol

:ciao: This should be in the lights section you would get better results..but while Im here..:bong: I Broke a HPS 4 hrs into cycle..I was raising a plant that had a stake for support and shoved it right into the bulb it blew..sceared the crap outta me and had glass everywhere..They do get extreamly HOT!! so dont touch them..and as for the CFL twisty bulbs I have read that people brakeing them over their plants and it leaving a whiye powder on them..But I have not had that happen. anyway good luck SAFETY MAN:lama:

cfl's contain mercury. Which is considered a hazardous material.. as are HID bulbs..(hazardous waste)
a nitemare story...

Bridges was told by the specialist not to clean up the bulb and mercury powder by herself. He recommended the Clean Harbors Environmental Services branch in Hampden.

Clean Harbors gave Bridges a low-ball estimate of $2,000, based on what she described, to clean up the room properly...

Universal Wastes must ultimately go to a recycler or a permitted treatment, storage or disposal facility. Recyclers separate the tubes into their component materials - glass, metal, phosphor powder and mercury - so that these materials can be recycled or reused.

Broke HPS, MH, CFL's, Flo tubes....yes i'm a clutz
When i broke one, I would leave the area for a bit to let the dust settle, go in with a shop vac sweep everything up. wipe everything down in the near vicinity of the break wash up and go on with my life.
The CFL's were the worst for mess wise. I just wonder where all the mercury is going when people toss out the spent bulbs...no one disposes of em properly. just toss in the trash and go on. :holysheep:

i broke a CFL pretty bad yesterday haha it may have scared me but didnt explode or leak anything out from it. just a few peices of glass. if it helps.
