Okay well first off welcome to MP....
Your post is a little bit confusing because a HPS and a HID light are the same thing...HID is either a MH(Metal Halide) or HPS(High Pressure Sodium)...
The other thing is you quoting temps at the tops of your bud sites...You just need to know the temp and RH of the grow area itself...the way you place your lights the proper distance is you take the back of your hand and you put it at the top of your plant...if it starts to feel like it is burning your lights are too close...you want to get it to the point where the back of your hand is as warm as possible without it feeling like it is burning...a cool tube or air cooled hood is a way to get the light right down on top of them...

I agree with puff...84 is riding the line of being too hot, and causing heat stress. What are you using for ventilation?

The "back of the hand" tip is a good way to tell. Also, keep an eye on the bud tops closest to the light. They'll tell you if it's too close and you'll know-they will start browning-it's easy to spot.

If you don't have an air-cooled hood, be sure and get some oscillating fans in there. That should bring your temps down a degree or two.
