I have one 1000w metal halide light. What is my grow area? Or to make this easier how many plants can I grow? Also if my electric bill runs 200/month about how much will it increase with one 1000w light being used following the 18 on 6 off rule?

Is your light cooled? Lights hanging closer to the plants is better, but not if your burning your plants. You should be able to cover a 5ft x 5ft area depending on your hood style, plant wise I would do 3 rows of 3. energy costs will vary depending on local costs but probably be $10 a week.

You should run your veg lights 24/7.

You want a minimum of 3000 lumens per sq ft for vegging and 5000 for flowering. So see how many lumens your lights puts out and plan your room accordingly.

Is this just going to be just a vegging space? Do you have a separate flowering space? The size of your flowering space is a consideration when figuring how many plants to grow.

We cannot tell you how much this will make your power bill go up without knowing how much you pay per KW. You are also going to need a good centrifuge type exhaust fan to keep things cool.

I dont know if it is cooled or not! Bare with me I'm new at this, on the box it says MH1000/U/MOG. I'm guessing it is not cooled and I don't have a hood, do I need one? I have an exhaust system in place

O.k. this is the first I've heard about veg. space and flowering space. It sounds like I need more room for flowering? Please explain or point me in the right direction.

What exactly do you have? A MH bulb needs a ballast (needs to be made to run a 1000W MH), a mogul socket, cords, and unless you are hanging vertical, a reflector hood.

What kind of exhaust system do you have in place (be really specific)? A 1000W MH is going to get really really hot.

No offense, but if you do not know about vegging and flowering and the different needs, you have a whole lot more reading to do. Start at the resources section and then go to the individual forums and read the stickies that apply to the way you want to grow.

I plan on making a hood and a chimney, air tight, with a high rpm exhausht fan inside the chimney itself. Kinda like a upside down funnel with the chimney going straight through the roof. I will cut vent holes in the floor to let cool air in. Sound good? By the way no offense taken whatsoever! Teach me, I am your student! young grasshopper! I can't seem to find the 'resources' section you are talking about. Also I was going to use regular seeds from some of the best green(that has seeds) for my first go around. So lets say all goes well, can I end up with decent green or do you suggest I buy some quality seeds? Obviously I wont break the bank with the seeds being my first time. Thanks in advance YOU are very helpful.

bag seed is a disaster for growers because your growing seedy weed, growing seeds takes away the potency. goto the attitude website(top of the page) and get some quality genetics that wont seed. I've had good results with Emerald Triangle seeds, they are relatively cheap and have feminized seeds available if you dont want to pick out the males.

I have to disagree with you on this.Just because it is bag seed doesn't mean it will be seedy smoke nor does it mean it will be a hermie.A lot of people grow just bagseed with really good results. There is a higher chance of a hermie but even good genetics can herm.

Growing bagseed is were its at for some people the choice is yours. I only suggested ordering genetics because I grew bagseed myself my 1st grow and I wish someone suggested ordering them online to me. Now that I've done my research I definetly prefer to order from seedbanks. I can see germinating that lonley seed that was found in that oz of dank and watching it carefully for nanners but it just seems like alot of work when you can buy a seed of the exact variety you prefer and alot less likely to ruin your other females.

A hermie is what happens when MJ turns into a "hermaphrodite". All MJ has the ability to change its sex in a last ditch effort to produce offspring. Some MJ has a stronger tendancy to change its sex or to produce both sexes on the same plant. Most MJ has this trait buried in its DNA and will show it if the plants are subjected to enough stress.

The bad thing is when you get commercial smoke that has a few seeds in it, it is very likely that it had seen enough stress to produce some male pollen pods and pollinated itself. When this happens, the seeds that are produced will have exponentially more tendency to "hermie" again, even with very little to no stress place on the plants grown from these seeds.

Often these hermies are hard to see if the plant doesn't herm real bad, but then a lot of the potency and good bud gets ruined by the plant switching its function to producing seeds rather than flowers to be pollinated. If a few hermies in a crop are missed then a whole crop can be ruined. That is why so many people avoid bag seed. You hate to put so much expense and effort into a grow only to have it hermie 2-3 weeks before harvest.

Dr. Drow. I am with you 100%. Quality genetics are not that much. It just sucks to spend 4-5 months growing something only to end up with a crop that is 75% (worthless) seeds. For me personally, it is just too big a chance to take. In addition to this, you are really never sure where the pollen came from that pollinated the female. It could be pollen from some ditchweed. You just never know.

O.k. I gonna buy good seeds! but I have seen a plant with my own eyes that was bag seed that grew from germination a foot tall solid bud. the whole plant was one bud, I mean after it was done and dried out of course, and I have heard about it one other time. Whats up with that?

A plants will grow bud. But not the same quality. A bag seed plant will grow and may not hemi but often times they do as they are often from hermi genetics.

Trust me in the end your much better off buying quality seeds.

I am not saying that you cannot grow from bagseed. I am saying that it is a huge crapshoot. You can spend 4-5 months (or more) growing a crop to end up with bud loaded with worthless seeds. You also have no idea of the quality--was the bud dank and so covered with trichs that it was sticky? To me, after I spend that amount of time, energy, and money on a crop, I need to get something out of it. Plants that hermie will produce substantially less smokeable bud and the quality will not be the same as the plant is putting energy into seed production, not THC production.
