Light Distance?

I have a 600 watt hps and wanted to know what a person should start off with for distance from the plants? I have read post but have not found a guide lline?

The back of your hand is your guideline. Put your light as close to the canopy as you would put the light,, to the back of your hand.:hubba: If it burns the back of your hand it will also be too hot for your plant.
 
Yep he is right its a great way to gauge how close u can get the light. also i usually have a fan blowing right over the tops of the plants because the more circulating fresh air the more heat they can tolerate. if u incorporate a fan the it becomes a much more grey area. for example ive got a 1000w within 8in. of the plants during flower but i had a large fan blowing the light and plants.
 
Also depends on the reflector, If you have a glass enclosed air cooled reflector, you can get your plants quite a bit closer than without
