inline fan/filter accessories?

Duct mufflers? Do they bring the sound down or is it not worth it? I am having a hard time understanding because couldnt you just remove last 3 feet or so of the actual trunk (hose with the metal strap wrapping) and leave the last 3 feet or so of just the insulation at the end of a flex duct run, and whammo you have a duct muffler? Maybe by collapsing the end insulation by removing the hose trunk (no rigidity) it creates backpressure?

Go to home depot and get R6 or better yet R8, if you dont mind black ducting for the R8. Hook it up and keep short and tight. Listen to before and after. If still too loud, you can build fan box to house the fan to take away vibration and a bit more on sound.
