It was hard being away from my plants for a week, but they look like they faired just fine. We must have had some rain. ;)

I was unpacking and came across my daughters bag of shells from this morning. Upon further investigation I realized a few were moving. Turns out 3 hermit crabs stowed away in her bag. They look nothing like the one hermit crab she bought from the souvineer shop so my guess is these are water-dwelling and will probably die soon. One is pretty damn big and creepy looking. I made them a little home complete with their native sand. Our neighbor works for the big aquarium here and hopefully will take these unwanted guests to a new happy home. :giggle:

Anyways, time for me to try and catch up on the boards. I missed everyone and am happy to be back. It was very cool the few times I sat on our neighbors deck and briefly checked my email. Our beach house didn't have wireless internet.

Did anyone miss me? How long did it take for you to realize I wasn't here?

LOL.

Woohoo, home sweet home!

Aww, thanks guys. Makes me all warm fuzzy inside knowing you missed me. :)

We thought the unwanted guests were dead this morning. We added some water to the sand and they are crawling around now. Ugly critters they are. My neighbor needs to get home from her lake house and take these nasty things off my hands. YUCK!

You guys crack me up with the crab jokes. I'll try and get a picture of them soon if they stay alive..lol.

The 1st pic is a beautiful sunset from our back deck on the bay side. The 2nd pic is from the gulf side. The beach was sure nice, and mostly private. The 3rd pic is a interesting sand castle the kids helped build.

Be sure to see the crab pics down below...

Hey Sticky- these guys were found along the shoreline by the bay. Some were in the water, or right at the waters edge. These are more aquatic then the land-based crab we got at the souvineer store.

Our water has chlorine in it and other things I bet these crabs don't like. I liked your link, and I have searched a few more sites and can't find anything on these specific ones. :( All I know is they acted dead until we put water in the tank thingy....

I Live Miles Away From an Ocean, Does This Mean My Ecuadorian Crab Will Die Because I Can’t Get Him Sea Water?
Technology being what it is today, people are able to maintain man-made reefs with complete food-chains and ecosystems in their aquariums. Obviously, it isn’t financially feasible for salt-water aquarium enthusiasts to have gallons of sea water shipped to them at home. So, aquarium-product manufacturers got wise and analyzed the chemical make-up of ocean water, and then formulated an acceptable substitute. You can find many brands of synthetic sea salt in pet stores today. The brand most land-hermit crab owners use for their Ecuadorian crabs is called "Instant Ocean." There are other brands available (Doc Wellfish, etc.) which are perfectly adequate. Sea salt is sold in large quantities, to enable people with reef systems to mix 30-100 gallons of it or more. Because of this, the smallest amount of sea salt you can buy is a 5-pound box.

I just google imaged Ecuadorian crabs and they appear to be a different type. The ones we got from the beach have slonger skinnier legs and claws and their eyes are creepier. These also have black stripes. I found a zebra crab, but its not that one either. Hmmmmmm......what type of crab have I found? Help!!!

Someone please take them off my hands!!!!!!
