i am a newbie who is growing outdoors. i planted my seeds in 2 gallon buckets using Top soil . the plants are about 6 weeks old . should i change to potting soil?? my guess would be yes..

Whoa up a minute,

Look here, just cause you planted in topsoil, and 2 gallon buckets doesn't spell the end of the world, or even a bad goof.

You can certainly transplant. Take a real good look at the nutes that are in the potting soil, and remember what is there if you go to adding goodies.
3 Gal to 3.5 gal is plenty for a plant that is being well tended.

Hey, send us some pics, and always remember there are plenty of wingnuts everywhere you go doing silly things that just make you shake your head.

topsoil isint gonna do much for them as far as food.. plus topsoil is so dense and itll just get way too compacted.. spring for a bag of potting mix, you should still be able to take those seeds out and in the other mix still hopefully... i mean you might be able to get away with topsoil if you really nutrient enrich it yourself when the time comes, but it might not thrive as well as if it was in a good light potting mix..

i'd just say like king kahuuna, it's not a problem right now, it's keeping it alive right? it's growing, maybe not as good, but it is. Just when you get a sufficient enough pot for the plant to finish it's grow in, put some decent soil in there, pull the plant out of the 2 gal, and knock off soil around the edges of the roots, don't break the roots though. put it in good, moist soil then give it a light watering. I just do that because I personally think that it gives the roots a much more comforting spot to get put into rather than dry soil. Good luck with them and like KK said, put up some pics!!

He said the plants are six weeks old so he won`t be moving seeds. First off do your plants seem to be growing much. That is the real test. And if you get you a 3 to 5 gallon bucket and fill it with potting mix you can take a garden hand spade and dig your plants up dirt and all and move them to your new pot. Make sure the new soil is moiste. Some times it sits and dryes out so you want it wet when you transplant. Try and keep as much of the rootball dirt in place. Im not saying get all the dirt in your bucket with the plants. Just what is held in by the roots. Wet the soil really good around your plants before moving them so the dirt holds together . If you need to, get your hands under it when you dig it up to help hold the root dirt in place. Good luck.
