I am currently trying to grow a few plants for as little a cost to me as possible, this is why for space sake and to save about 5$ a bucket, I would like to try to grow in nothing more then good soil, held by a plastic bag, so basically I would like to grow in a ordinary store plastic bag that you bring your groceries in. Now first of , can I use these to plant in and number two , do I have to treat them with anything so they don’t release toxins or anything in my soil. Thanks guys and have a wonderful day!

I also plan to buy a 600 watt ballast and a 600 watt hps bulb later on this week , I was wondering since I’m very cheap and can buy a reflector or venting for this system , if I could just point 2 oscillating fans at the rig and make a reflector with bent aluminum. I’m currently using 2 48” double fluorescent with ecoplant bulbs for the vegetation stage.

You know you can buy plastic grow bags for something like 50 cent a piece right? Imo, grocery bags aren't going to be sturdy eneough. You'll bust apart your root ball everytime you move them.

The potential bag rips are not my primary concerns, I just want to know if anything aside from the bags ripping apart that could happen due to using old store bags.

PS: the point of this is to use as less money as possible , 50 cents busts my budget :p

You'd be better off with milk jugs or 2 liter coke bottles than grocery bags imo. I don't see grocery bags working. It's not tears i'm talking about. The bag won't stay upright filled with dirt and I don't see how you could have good drainage with those.

If you really want to go that route, why not just buy a bag of soil, and plant directly into that? I've seen tomatoes grown that way.

But seriously, if you are spending the money for a 600 lamp, go buy some cheapo 5 gallon buckets or something. You are spending a good deal of money for the lamp, but cheaping out on everything else???? Come on, man.

That's like people who do nothing but a whole bunch of serious engine modifications to their car, and don't beefen up the suspension, transmission, etc.

That is a very good idea ES:). I've never thought about that. It would probably work like a charm.

you should go to your local garden/landscape center and ask them if they have some leftover pots they arent using. I used to work at one of these and they always had thousands of used, cheap plastic pots that were going to waste! I don't pay for pots anymore, you should give it a shot!

excellent!!....;)

I think that most of us try to save money on our grows and understand what being on a budget means. However, you have to know where you can cut corners and where you can't. I don't mean to offend you, but if 50 cent grow bags are going to break your budget, maybe you should find another "hobby".
