Law enforcement agents expected to make at least one arrest when they went to Three Rivers Estates just outside Fort White Monday, Aug. 31.
The second arrest was a bit of a surprise.
Law enforcement agents had received a tip from the Gilchrist County Sheriffs Office that somebody was growing marijuana inside a home at 1534 S.W. Newark Drive. So they got a search warrant and arrived at the home.
Inside, agents discovered multiple live marijuana plants growing in a bedroom.
The room had been modified to specifically cultivate marijuana, including special lighting, ventilation systems and irrigation, Columbia County Sheriffs Spokesman Sgt. Edward Seifert said.
Agents seized 20 live plants and thousands of dollars worth of equipment.
The surprise arrest came next.
Agents went to the home next door, at 1498 S.W. Newark Drive, to ask the neighbor what he knew about the other neighbor. While conducting the interview, agents discovered a near identical setup as the first home, Seifert said.
But in this house, agents seized three times as many plants 60 in all.
Each plant had a street value of roughly $1,000 each.
And each home was new or nearly new. This is a recurring theme in and around Fort White, where multiple marijuana-growing operations have been found in new or nearly new homes in the past year.
Those arrested at the first home included Stephanie Price, 26, who was charged with cultivation of cannabis, possession of more than 20 grams of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia; and Seth Shaffer, 20, charged with cultivation of cannabis, possession of more than 20 grams of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
At the second home, the man arrested was Lionel A. Martinez, 25, charged with cultivation of cannabis, possession of more than 20 grams of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The arrests were made by the Columbia County Multi-Jurisdictional Task Force, which is comprised of members from the Columbia County Sheriff's Office, the Florida Dept. of Law Enforcement, the Lake City Police Dept. and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
In these particular arrests, the Gilchrist County Sheriffs Office also participated.
