Hi everyone. I have been debateing on and reading about english bulldogs for about a year now..Most where I live. breeders want between 2 and 3 k for a puppy.. ( I live in an exspensive area) My brother was at an HTG store up north where he lives and this bulldog puppy. wearing an HTG shirt followed him around the stpore.. My brother talked to the kid who owned it and ended up telling me about the puppy.. I ended up calling up North and speaking with the kid who owned the pup and he actually has 2 of this breed of dog and loves them to death.. I ended up contacting the breeder who lives up in another state and she has 3 males.. very reasonably priced.. like $1550.00 shipping included.. I even spoke with her vet up in her state who did go on to tell me that english bulldogs are high maitanence and come with their set of problems including. respiatory problems possible. bone hip problems.. I would love to own this breed of dog but at the same time dont want to be making some vet ,who preys on the feelings of bulldog owners hearts.. getting rich off of me.. The last dog I had was a boxer and I had read about boxers. their life span.. possible cancer . tumors and spent over 5 k trying to keep my boxer alive and in the end.. had to put him down which broke our heart and would love to avoid this kind of thing with another problematic animal.. My question is has anoyone here owned any english bulldogs? what do you guys think about owning one..? Thanks Hero

We wanted an English bulldog several years ago but decided against it for the basket of health issues that come with them that you mention. French bulldogs are almost as good looking and are much healthier and long lived. IMO it's great you're doing your homework first. Very responsible of you :hubba: Good luck!

Dont get mad, im not, just hear me out. :)

Paying money for a dog is cruelty to animals. Not directly; but you could save a much more deserving dog from a local shelter and save 2-3,000 dollars! This mone you pay, just take a guess where it goes. I have witnessed many a "friends" and their parents sell these dogs to buy things that were not deserving (we'll not get into that).

Mixed breed dogs are healthier, live longer, dont get stolen...etc...Its just my opinion that pure breed dogs are a waste of money TO PURCHASE. Dang near every pure dog I have seen over 10 years old, that was lucky enough to live over 10, had hip dysplasia, cancer, blindness...list goes on.

Save a deserving animal, go to your local pound.

As someone who has just rescued a mixed breed dog a couple weeks ago and one who has had standard poodles for the last 15 years, i say get what you want. Have the bitch and sire been health tested for the most common disorders the bull dogs have? Do your homework. It's a crap shoot but hopefully an educated one. Good luck. You will be a good dad to whomever is lucky enough to come to their forever home in your home. All animals cost money and you need to know if your willing to spend it on a pet.

Word.

truer words have rarely been spoken.

good post

Thanks Dman its really how I feel. I hate losing a family member like a pup, but the months after when we visit the pound again is a most joyous moment you never forget. Makes it all worth while.

Hero I have an english bulldog and if you do choose to get one I would strongly suggest getting insurance for the dog... It runs like $50 a month but will def make the choices alot easier when health problems arise.... and they will... This was STRONGLY reccomended by my vet before the dog was examined for the first time even...

Also keeping them on a strict diet will play a huge role in their health... Once a bully becomes overweight it will be very hard to get the weight off and it will just contribute to more breathing problems...

Thanks Ant.. Appreciate it.. I am still up in the air about it. I love the breed but cant stop thinking about the last dog I had and the exspense's he incured.. If I knew an honest vet in Palm beach county Fl that was accostumed to bullys. knowing their allergys.. respitory problems I would be more inclined to buy but I am in no rush and know a good breeder so I will wait.. Thanks Hero

I'm sorry, but why are people even breeding dogs who inherit so many BAD health problems?? Why would you continue to breed a line of animals who can't even have puppies naturally, they all have to have a c-section to deliver. Why would you continue a line that has so much trouble breathing? That has so many cancers and skin issues?? And to pay $3000 dollars or more for one to only have continuing huge medical bills as the animal gets older?? I know people like what they like, but it's just mind boggling to me.

Sorry, I'll get off my soap box now, but that's one of my major peeves. And yes, I am an animal lover, we have 3 dogs (all mutts), 5 ferrets, 3 rats, 7 cats, meat rabbits, chickens for eggs, etc.

Anyway, I'm glad you are thinking it over before you decide. That's half the battle, at least you are going in informed as to what the future holds.

I'll just shut up now and go sit in the corner and watch my plants grow.:bolt: :watchplant:

What a cutie Ant.. I was driving in the park near where I live yesterday and there was a man walking a bully. I asked him how long he had had him and he said a year.. I told him I was up in there air about buying one because of all the health problems that can be associated with the breed and he told me he has had alot of health problems but that he loved his dog and how gr8 of a breed they were.. Still undecided.. thinking I should refrain.. even thou they are adorable.. Hero
