NAVARINO - Authorities have destroyed approximately 8,000 marijuana plants worth millions of dollars, growing at the Navarino Wildlife Area in Shawano County, WI.

“It was one of the largest marijuana grow operations ever discovered in Wisconsin, and definitely one of the most detailed camp sites,” said Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen.
A neighbor FOX 11 spoke to Tuesday says the plants were discovered by a hunter about two or three weeks ago. Authorities say they had been monitoring the sites since then.
The eradication operation started around 6:00 a.m. Tuesday and involved 78 law enforcement officials from 9 local, state, and federal agencies.
Investigators closed about three miles of Shawano County Highway K, from Townline Road to State Highway 156 while they removed the plants.
The Shawano County Sheriff’s Department says the plants were found at 12 separate grow sites at the 15,000 acre wildlife area. Four separate camp and work sites were also discovered, processed for evidence and then dismantled.
Authorities believe that the grow operation had been abandoned for some time, and that a large amount of marijuana had been harvested.
"It's a very significant grow, even on a federal level," said Chris Hackbarth with the Drug Enforcement Administration. "We are seeing more in the Midwest. It's traditionally been more out in California."
Shawano County Sheriff Randy Wright said they found some ammunition at the camp sights and it could have been a dangerous situation if someone had come across the operation while it was still occupied.
The Shawano County Sheriff’s Department is asking anyone who has noticed abnormal activity in the Navarino Wildlife Area this summer or fall to contact them.

If they had only cleaned up ALL their mess, they may have been able to grow again next year. Instead, they took their cash and left the mess for the taxpayers to deal with.
