Hello all

I was looking for a nice light system to start out with. So far this is what I've looked at

Here is the link to the page

I don't no much about lighting as of yet. And if anyone here can give me a link to a cheaper or better light system it would be much appreciated

That is a little bit high priced the link you posted. Also it's a unit that really calls for a blower to vent so figure another 120-200 + some ducting.

These guys have good prices:

You can get a similar system as above but they also throw in a MH conversion bulb. Or you can skip the air cooling for now and get an open reflector and be under 200 bucks. Consider that carefully though as it can be difficult getting the heat out of a smaller area without a cooling reflector + blower.

Another good one pricewise is http://www.hidhut.com/

Well see I'm pretty new to all this. I'm not really sure what I'm looking for but the htgsupply link you gave me will probably be what ill go for.

As for the blower is that a item or are you just speaking of a fan? I don't think i will need it the area which i will be using it in is about 8x8 and i have a couple fans in there as is.Could you possibly point me to the items i would need for the ventilation so i can no for future use if needed?

Yes I mentioned a blower (aka centrifugal fan...people also use squirrel cage fan) because the reflector you posted is an air-cooled reflector - the flanges on either end attach to ducting, there is glass on the bottom, so that the blower moves a hell of a lot of air right over the bulb, out the ducting and out the grow space, greatly reducing heat buildup especially in small grow spaces.
Since you have an 8x8 space, I think, if ambient temps aren't high, you can get by with a less expensive open reflector, aka "batwing" reflector, and just point one of your fans right at the bulb. These HID bulbs get very hot. Be very cautious of the bulb, don't mist the plants when its on (open reflector) or it may explode, and wearing sunglasses is recommended.
Take into account also as you scheme out your setup the plant odor, which may be intense at times, and, if you do go the route of air-cooling, there is a certain amount of noise with one of those fans going.

See thats what i thought. I should be ok I think. I'll order my light system here soon and when i get everything set up ill be sure to post some pictures. Hell it might be 2 weeks or a month before i get this light setup. I really need to buy a new PC. I've had this one for about 6-7 years i believe. So its definitely time for a new one.

Thx for the help bearfootbob

Cool beans ~ a lot of people have great success with a 400 watt setup. Part of the fun is the options and strategies, between lighting, soil, hydro, on and on. It took me forever to decide on a 600 watt. In the future though, I think I will be looking more in to multiple 150's, and keeping low trained plants. It's all about efficiency of space / power indoors IMO but there are many roads -
Oh btw if you're mildly mechanical and know your PC components you can put a kit together that will blow the doors off any Dell....newegg.com a geek paradise....peace
