Will 100w of extra hps lighting increase my yeild substantially or would it not be worth the trouble? Any input is greatly appreciated!

what is the demensions of your grow area and how many watts/lumens do you have in there right now? This summer if I get up some nerve I'm going to make an all inclusive program with visual basic to do all the math calculations for growing mary jane for this forum :p. Maybe give it a Marijuana Passion logo on it or something. I think that'd be cool.

I have a 250w hps, 175w mh, 2 12inch fluoro tubes, 1 24 inch fluoro tube and a 42w cfl in a room thats 3 ft long, 2 1/2 ft wide and 8 ft tall. My lights are about 4 1/2-5 ft from the ground though.

well at your current area if I did my math right (width x height x length = square footage)

(square footage x optimal lumens (5,000 per square foot) = 300,000 lumens) Is that right? But thats at optimal, you can do it with 3,000 lumens which would bring it down to 180,000. But thats considering the light and other things arn't in the room because obviously your plants in the area and the light itself take up room so you can't fill that space with light because its occupied by other matter. Also, if you don't have your light outside of the box shinning down into it but rather have it inside the box about mid ways down then half the box doesn't even need light.

Does that help?

according to generalized sites based on lumens a 250watt puts out a mean of 20500 lumens and then you said you have 42w cfl, well at that I have one that is at 2700 lumens, you didn't list the lumens of the other lights but I doubt they are that much more. The highest floro tubes wal mart sells are 3200 lumens so lets say your other 3 are 3200 lumens (but the might not be) so thats 9600 lumens.

That comes to a total of 32800 lumens you have right now. So more light would be nice. But now thats agreeing that all the math I did is right in the first place.

As to the height of the lights and the amount of light they are producing I don't know if it is helping or hurting or if it will do anything at all, I don't know how to do the math on that.

Square feet is a measurement of area, not volume.

Your equation above is for volume. Bombbudpuffa's grow area is

3 feet x 2.5 feet = 7.5 square feet

A 400w puts off 50,000 lumens, so by my calculations a 250 W would give off about 30,000 lumens.

Assuming your calculations about the other lights is correct, he has a total of 42,300 lumens

42,300 lumens divided by 7.5 feet is 5640 lumens per square foot.

He has optimum light for veg. The 100w HPS would be beneficial for flowering. It would have better penetration.

yes but if you do sqaure feet like that that is based on a 2d flat diagram of the area of his closet. It also has volumen. It doesn't matter how much floor space you have as to how tall the depth and height of the area is. if you have. Maybe thats how the height of the light gets worked into the equation.

Thanks guys! I already threw the extra 100w in. I just wanted to make sure it was as good an idea I thought it was. Draston, I think Runbyhemp is right on the square foot thing. If I had 60 sq ft i'd need alot more lighting than I have now! With the added 100w my room tops out at 80 degrees, it was around 77 without it. Hopefully this will really fatten up my buds. Thanks again guys! Btw, RH, this is my flowering room, not veg.
