first does anyone know how many lumens the walmart 24 inch grow lights put off they are 20watt with 75 watt out put. second, I have a bunch of old floro 4 ft 2 bulb hanging shop lights in my garage, will these help me out at all or are they the wrong kind of light?thanks i really appreciate all the help guys.

Sorry can't help you with the wal-mart lights, but I can tell you that those shop lights will work fine for cuttings, seedlings, and vegging but IMO they won't work very well for flowering! I use T8's for seedlings and cuttings! Make sure that you get the right spectrum of light for what you need, seedlings, cuttings and veggings its best to get the 6500K and when flowering get 2700K but like I said Floro's arent the best to use for flowering they just don't put out the lumens and don't give enough penetration for the light to make nice tight buds!

Excellent post Jao3333! It's too bad you couldn't get the charts and graphs into the post.

I have an issue with one statement:

that being said i want to talk about HID lights for a second. The problem with HID lamps is they are so hot you cannot place them close to your plants. a 400w HPS bulb is recommend to be at least 22 inches above the plant, and remember what you just read about light intensity at a foot away, so at 22 inches your almost two feet away from the plant much of the light, and your money, is wasted. there are special cooling hoods avalible for HID bulbs that help keep them cool, and if your using a HID lamp you need one so you dont loose the intensity of your light.

I keep my 400 watters (HPS and MH) within 12" of my plants with no ill effect- and these are not remote ballast units we're talking about. I've read about the 22" before, but I've had much different experience as have many other growers here.

Again, informative post- maybe you can get those charts linked in?
Thank you.

No offense my friend, but you should cite sources when posting info that is not your own.

checking the heat level of your lights(no matter what wattage)is as simple as checking a baby bottle, put you hand over the plants while your lights are on,if you can't hold your hand there without burning, then your probably o.k.,if your room is 6' of longer,I suggest a light track,it will move back and forth keeping temps to a minimum, good luck, hope this helps
