Trying out hydro: my first DWC bucket

Well the pH had gone all the way up above 6.5, so I adjusted it back down to just above 5.5. Some of her fan leaves are curling down, so I'll back off the nutes even more, unless this could be the pH? In good news, I see the beginnings of roots poking through the bottom of the baskets and they...

Trying out hydro: my first DWC bucket

Thanks for stopping by! I do have a TDS meter and pH up and down. I just realized I didn't actually list everything I have for this, so thanks for reminding me! I have: * bucket and basket * air pump/hose/stone * basic TDS meter, calibrated (and more calibration solution) * pH testing...

Trying out hydro: my first DWC bucket

I've always been fairly happy with soil grows in the past, but I'm getting tired of sweeping up soil from the grow room floor, the bugs that hitch a ride in with soil, and having to either pay for top brand soil or gamble on the quality of a local one. So after some prognostication, I've...

    First Grow Random Seeds

And I'll add the best piece of advice I think most first time soil growers need to hear: don't overwater. Once the seedling sprouts, you want to let the soil get very dry between waterings. Water heavily but not frequently. And no fertilizer for awhile! You'll be tempted, resist the temptation.

    First Grow Random Seeds

I'll second that the lights are way too far away. For seedlings I usually start with a single 26w CFL about 2-3 inches from the top of the plant. Make sure you have a desk fan or similar fan pointed at it to keep the air circulating.

El Dorado (+freebies), SCROG in soil

My neglect continues, but the good news is the plants seem OK despite only once-daily check-ins by me. Lights are off now, but I had a minute so I thought I'd post a photo-less update. The main ElDorado female is starting to crank out the flowers, smells wonderful. Now just three more months...

Starting seedlings in perlite for DWC

So I made a run to the local hydroponics store today and got the things I needed for my first DWC bucket. However, I forgot rockwool cubes for seedlings/clones. Is there any reason I can't start them in perlite instead like I do for my soil grows? I have tons of that. Would hate to make another...

    Root aphids maybe?

So I'm right that's what they are?

    Root aphids maybe?

For an idea of scale, the white boulder next to it is perlite.

    Root aphids maybe?

I've been trying to pin down why some of the lower fan leaves look prematurely splotchy, and the pH seems fine, nutrient levels should be OK. Then after watering tonight I noticed some nearly microscopic reddish things crawling around on the soil surface. They are tiny and fast so very hard to...

El Dorado (+freebies), SCROG in soil

I'm sad I've been neglecting my grow journal, but work and family have taken so much of my time recently that I've only just been able to keep up the plants, no time for documentation! Here's one photo I snapped tonight of the main El Dorado female, around day 30 of 12/12. I pulled the male...

Interesting cheap DIY 175x digital microscope

Unfortunately the only plant I have flowering is just getting started, no meaningful trichrome development for me to look at, but here's a photo of the flowers I do have. Can't wait to try this out further along in the flowering.

I should add, since it probably makes a difference, I'm using a Moto X (first gen).

The date from a penny, for scale. Once again, taken handheld and this one with a too-bright light at an unfortunate angle.

Interesting cheap DIY 175x digital microscope

I pulled a lens from a dead CDROM drive's laser and did the hair clip + tape method and took this photo of a leaf handheld. Can't wait to try on a more stable platform and with the slightly larger lens from a laser pointer.

Interesting cheap DIY 175x digital microscope

Came across this and thought it would make for interesting macro and trichome photos: http://www.instructables.com/id/10-Smartphone-to-digital-microscope-conversion/?ALLSTEPS He claims 325x with two lenses but I'm not sure that level of magnification would be useful for cannabis...

Bug ID? (looks predatory to me...)

I'd say definitely not a deer fly, I know what those look like and this guy was smaller with slender wings. I agree it looks like a fly, just maybe one that's mimicking a wasp?

Bug ID? (looks predatory to me...)

I'll take a look at the leaf undersides with my loupe tomorrow, already closed up the room for the night. Never had root aphids that I knew of at least. Not sure what kind of gnats I had that one time... How many kinds of gnats are there?

Bug ID? (looks predatory to me...)

Only other bugs I've seen are gnats, and never more than one at a time, usually don't see any. Doesn't seem like there's an infestation, though I guess it's hard to know what's going on under the soil. I've had gnat problems in the past and they were all over the place, much worse than this...
