Heat output of 300w CFL vs 400w or 600w HPS?

I've put as much as 310w of CFLs (mostly 42w each) in my grow room without running into any heat problem. However, my exhaust fan is just a duct booster rated 80 cfm, and I'm worried it won't be up to the task if I upgrade to a 400w or 600w HPS. Is there an easy way to calculate how much...

Trying out hydro: my first DWC bucket

Yes, definite hermy, the second flower node to appear had both a pistil and nanners. I pulled it when I posted that last post and cleaned out the bucket. I'll stick to soil for the moment and save the dwc until I upgrade the lighting and ventilation in the flower room, hopefully by late summer...

Starting seedlings in perlite for DWC

Nope, I moved an older seedling from soil but then the stress caused her to hermy within a week of flipping. I'm going to stick to soil until my current grow gets closer to harvest, then restart the DWC bucket.

El Dorado (+freebies), SCROG in soil

Just started some seeds to become a second screen, staggered a couple months behind the other one. Went with just the freebies this time, in case they can't survive my weeklong absence in a couple weeks. All three popped, look good if a little stretchy, as seedlings can be. Moved one into a...

    Trouble germinating

Method that seems to work well for me is just seed starting mix (I like this one: http://www.organicmechanicsoil.com/products-catalog-organic-potting-soil.html) mixed with perlite in a cup or one of those decomposing peat cups with plastic wrap or a ziploc over it. These three just popped today...

El Dorado (+freebies), SCROG in soil

    I meant to add that, for anyone curious, the lights are now as follows: 4 X 42w 2700K (2800 x 4) 1 X 42w 6500K (2800) 1 X 32w 2700K (2200) =============== 242w, or 111 per square foot 16,200 lumens, 7480 per square foot

El Dorado (+freebies), SCROG in soil

Day 38 for ElDorado since start of 12/12, Day 20 for Nirvana freebie. Just a few photos from around the canopy. I get the feeling this freebie is going to grow a lot, I'm kind of glad the ElDorado slowed it's growth more quickly than I'd expected.

Trying out hydro: my first DWC bucket

Hermied. I'm guessing the stress of moving from soil to hydro while also starting flowering was too much. Oh well! I have some more seeds germinating anyhow, I'll pick a couple to start hydro.

    beginner needing some advice

I've also never used that medium (not sure what it is?), but it looks like it would be more likely to retain too much water rather than dry out too fast. As that baby taproot is forming it needs oxygen, so wait for it to get dry before watering.

Any way to leave a DWC bucket for a week?

So I've recently started my first DWC bucket, and it just occurred to me that unlike soil, which can easily survive a week or more without water if it's watered heavily first, my DWC setup seems to need at least daily pH, ppm, water level checks. How do DWC growers take vacations? I have one...

Small time DWC setup / First grow - Any advise is appreciated

I'll chime in as someone who's used CFLs in small grows for years, they can get the job done for a small (~2-3 sq ft) scrog style setup, and they have the upside of being cheap and easily rearranged to get the light where you want it. My last grow in 2012 (before kids were born and I took a...

Trying out hydro: my first DWC bucket

I have what may be an even better idea. I have a 6.5 gallon brewing bucket I never use anymore and it already has a tap in it for easier res draining. I'll put some reflectant tape on the outside and move the plant to there. That way I have a larger res to minimize pH drift and can use the other...

Trying out hydro: my first DWC bucket

Thanks! It's OK to put pH up/down directly into the res though right? She's not drinking much yet so I was only topping off every other day, but adjusting pH once a day. I'll mix up some weaker nute solution tonight and do a change tomorrow night.

Insert Obligatory First Grow Title Here (big write up and lots of pics)

Barbara looks like a boy to me.... Though hard to be positive until they're a little larger.

Apple Bans Mass Roots - Cannabis Social App

Google may be at least as bad as Apple on the privacy front, but at least when an app is removed from the Play Store all users can still install it if the app developer hosts the installation file on their website. Without rooting your phone! Just have to enable unknown sources and voilà. As far...

El Dorado (+freebies), SCROG in soil

Just a few nicer photos, the last batch were taken with my cell phone, I pulled out the DSLR for these. First, the main front cola of the ElDorado, which is starting to fill in nicely. Day 36 of 12/12 for the ElDorado. Next, a couple photos of secondary tops in the back. There were 4...

Trying out hydro: my first DWC bucket

Thanks! I just checked in on the grow room, pH had shifted back up near 6.5, so I adjusted it back down near 5.5. Anyone know what would cause such large spikes in pH over a 24 hour period? The TDS readings have hardly changed, water level was down maybe half an inch at most, perhaps less...

Trying out hydro: my first DWC bucket

Poked my head in just before lights out, res temp was up to 72. So it looks like that's my range, mid 60s to low 70s. Didn't have time to test pH or ppm, will check those when the lights go on again tonight.

El Dorado (+freebies), SCROG in soil

Time for photos. First, the canopy. It's not as full as I like, but this ElDorado doesn't seem to stretch and grow as much during 12/12 as the sativas I'm used to. The mystery seed one still has a bit of stretching left to go, so maybe it can help fill the voids, at least on the right side...
