    Happy New Year 2024

Funny you mention that - I keep a ceramic jar full of the stuff in the fridge, and that's actually what I use. But 'they' say it's not healthy, and I wouldn't want to pass on unhealthy habits to anyone...say...smoking or drinking alcohol or < GASP! > cornbread made with bacon grease! (Maybe I'm...

    Happy New Year 2024

All I know almost for sure is that tomorrow will bring me a crock pot full of black-eyed-peas and a skillet of Uncle Charlie's Cornbread. You won't get "cornbread consumption" from this recipe! Uncle Charlie's Cornbread (origin unknown) 1 C self-rising cornmeal 1 C cream style corn 2 Eggs 1/4...

    Smoking wood. And meat.

Never use pine. Ever, ever, ever. I keep on hand 'hard' maple, oak, cherry, apple, hickory, a small amount of mesquite (that goes a long way with me, personally) and I get citrus wood (orange, grapefruit) from kin in Florida. If you smoke meat, try a chicken with citrus wood. If you can find...

My wife is a long time Type 1 Diabetic, and she's on a pump. She's had two rounds of 'the ***'. Her work did not require it, but she thought she should get it due to risk from her diabetes. That's her choice. Nobody else's. I can't disagree with her choice, because I have no arguments against it...

I am, at this very moment, watching 9 young deer playing in the hamster-sized snowflakes falling and blanketing mine and the next door neighbor's yard. Running, bucking, kicking, and lightly head-butting each other. Like a pack of puppies. Pretty cool. Plus...future tenderloins! 😍

Great guy I grew up and went to school with did exactly that. With a .44 Magnum he had just bought with the raise he'd just gottn. He lost. He blew his own brains all over his brother, sitting next to him. His family lost, and his many friends lost. Guns and whiskey are a really bad mix.

I watched quite a bit of that - over half. I'm of the opinion that unbiased news networks, sadly, are no longer. I'm pushing 70, and while news reporting has always been imperfect, I believe the few (3, when I was a teen, even) news networks available "in the olden days" were generally fairly...

    Happy Birthday, Dad.

I can't say anything except I'm sorry you had that experience. If not for my dad, I might have killed myself in my early years. I tended toward delinquency in my youth...not because I was a thief or a bad guy, but because I was crazy. He tempered that some. Today, I appreciate it.

    Happy Birthday, Dad.

A good friend of mine lost his dad at age 12. I was very fortunate to have a father in my young life. I appreciate that, and appreciate y'alls kind words. Even though he was an ornery bastage, he shaped my life, and he did so honorably. He was a good dad.

Yeah, I struggle with remembering the boot camp days when I could be outside standing in formation at attention in two minutes - that after eliminating, brushing my teeth, buttoning my fatigue pants and finishing dressing. Two minutes: in uniform and standing at attention. I'm lucky now if I...
