The reason your"fan noise going down" (I take this as the fan speed was slowing down) was that the fresh air intake was not big enough to allow the right about of air into the room. You have to size the intake to the proper size as well as the fans. The higher the cfm the bigger the fresh air...

If I remember right it 1% air flow speed loss per 10 ft of pipe or a 90* turn 2-90* +10 ft of pipe = 3% air flow loss so a 400 cfm fan will lose 12 cfm equaling 388cfm
